A Guide To Botox In Singapore

Botox (BTX) is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Whether you’re considering BTX for the first time or looking for a refresher, our page covers everything you need to make an informed decision about this rejuvenation option.

What is BTX

Botox (BTX), is short for Botulinum toxin, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

When injected in small doses into specific muscles, botox is used cosmetically to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines.

BTX works by blocking the release of a chemical messenger called acetylcholine from nerves endings in the muscles. This disruption temporarily relaxes the muscles, reducing dynamic facial wrinkles and lines caused by repetitive movements like frowning, squinting or forehead wrinkling. The results are a softening and smoothing of lines.

How is the BTX procedure done?

  1. Our specialist doctors will examine your skin and muscle movement to determine the treatment plan to achieve your goals.
  2. A numbing cream can be applied to the treatment areas before injections for comfort.
  3. Using a fine needle, a few drops of BTX are injected into the facial muscle of the pre-determined problem areas, blocking the nerve impulses that cause the contractions. During this, you may feel slight pinpricks. The procedure is usually very quick, often taking only a few minutes.
  4. As the stimulation to the muscle weakens, the lines gradually soften, giving you a more refreshed, relaxed, highly natural looking appearance.

What Can BTX Treat?

Some of the most common areas BTX can be used to treat include:

When should I consider BTX?

Some signs that it may be time to consider BTX include:

Moderate to Severe Wrinkles Forming

If dynamic wrinkles like frown lines or crow’s feet are noticeable when your face is at rest, BTX can help smooth them out.

Wrinkles Appearing Earlier Than Expected

Factors like sun damage, smoking, lack of SPF use can cause wrinkles to appear prematurely. BTX can be a preventative measure.

Wrinkles Impacting Confidence

If wrinkles are making you feel self-conscious or older than your age, BTX can subtly improve their appearance.

Desire to Pause Skin’s Aging Process

BTX works by blocking facial movements that contribute to wrinkle formation over time. This can a temporary “pause button” for aging.

Genetics and Lifestyle Factors

If wrinkles run in your family or you spend lots of time in the sun, you may be more prone to early wrinkling treatable by BTX.

It is ideal to consider BTX when wrinkles are just starting to impact your appearance but before they become severely etched into the skin. Consultation with our specialists can help determine if BTX is right for your individual skin concerns and genetics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any downtime after treatment?

There is usually minimal or no bleeding or swelling after the procedure. The nurses may apply some ice to the injection sites after the procedure to reduce any swelling. Some patients have it done during their lunch hour and return to normal activities thereafter. We usually advise patients to avoid vigorous exercise or massaging the face immediately after the injection to avoid inadvertent spread of BTX to other facial regions.

How long does BTX last?

The BTX takes effect in 3 to 4 days, while maximum results are achieved in 7 to 10 days. Gradually over 3 to 6 months, the BTX effect will fade, and the muscle action will return. When the frown line starts to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired result.

Is BTX safe?

BTX is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world. It is safe in the hands of properly trained health professionals. The main risk is temporary droopiness of the eyelids, which may occur in approximately 1-3% of cases. This can be treated with appropriate eyedrops. Unnatural looking results can be avoided by titrating the amount of BTX and where it is placed. It is attractive to keep some natural movement, so you look refreshed, not fake.
