What is BTX

Botox (BTX), is short for Botulinum toxin, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

When injected in small doses into specific muscles, botox is used cosmetically to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines.

BTX works by blocking the release of a chemical messenger called acetylcholine from nerves endings in the muscles. This disruption temporarily relaxes the muscles, reducing dynamic facial wrinkles and lines caused by repetitive movements like frowning, squinting or forehead wrinkling. The results are a softening and smoothing of lines.

How is the BTX procedure done?

Is there any downtime after treatment?

There is usually minimal or no bleeding or swelling after the procedure. The nurses may apply some ice to the injection sites after the procedure to reduce any swelling. Some patients have it done during their lunch hour and return to normal activities thereafter. We usually advise patients to avoid vigorous exercise or massaging the face immediately after the injection to avoid inadvertent spread of BTX to other facial regions.  

How long does BTX last?

The BTX takes effect in 3 to 4 days, while maximum results are achieved in 7 to 10 days. Gradually over 3 to 6 months, the BTX effect will fade, and the muscle action will return. When the frown line starts to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired result. 

Is BTX safe?

BTX is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world. It is safe in the hands of properly trained health professionals. The main risk is temporary droopiness of the eyelids, which may occur in approximately 1-3% of cases. This can be treated with appropriate eyedrops.
