What is Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Tummy tuck surgery, or Abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat, tighten abdominal muscles, and sculpt the abdomen for a smoother look.

While the goal of a tummy tuck is to create a flatter, firmer stomach area, there are different types that can be used depending on a person’s individual needs and goals.

Types of Tummy Tucks

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck involves a hip-bone to hip-bone incision to remove excess tissues, tighten muscles, and flatten the abdomen. However, it leaves a longer scar as compared to a partial abdominoplasty.

Often, the belly button is also relocated higher on the stomach. A full tummy tuck is best for people with large amounts of drooping skin and fat spanning from their breasts to pubic area.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck involves a smaller incision. It targets excess tissues between the belly button and pubic area, and does not tighten upper abdominal muscles.

For people with less redundant skin concentrated only in the lower abdomen, a mini tummy tuck may be sufficient. Recovery time is often shorter with less intense scarring compared to a full tummy tuck.

Is Tummy Tuck For Me?

You may be suitable for a tummy tuck if you have:

  • Saggy or loose abdominal skin, often due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.
  • Stubborn pockets of fat resistant to diet and exercise.
  • Weak or separated abdominal muscles resulting in a protruding abdomen.
  • Medical conditions like poor posture or back pain due to excess abdominal skin.

You may not be suitable for a tummy tuck if you have:

  • Chronic conditions
  • A BMI higher than 30
  • Smoking habits
  • Pregnancy plans

A private, 1-to-1 consultation with our experienced plastic surgeon Dr Timothy Shim allows for a detailed assessment of your condition and to ascertain if tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is the most appropriate choice for you.

Recovering From Tummy Tuck Procedure

  • Immediately after surgery, you will have dressings around your abdomen to support healing. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage discomfort.
  • In the first 2 weeks, you will experience swelling, bruising and limited ability to move around freely. Focus on resting, keeping incisions clean and taking pain medication as needed.
  • Swelling and bruising gradually improve within 2-4 weeks. Stitches or staples are removed within 10-14 days. Return visits at 1 week and 1 month allow your surgeon to check progression.
  • Light exercises may resume at 4 weeks but wait 6 weeks before high-impact activities.
  • If your tummy tuck included correcting diastasis recti through abdominal muscle plication, expect recovery to take slightly longer since this is an additional internal procedure.

While most patients feel fully healed by 2 months, listen to your body and surgeon’s advice during your post-op follow ups. Results can continue improving for 3-6 months as swelling subsides fully and tissue settles. You may see final results by 1 year.
