Dry Eye Assessment & Treatment

Dry eye is more than just discomfort – it can affect your vision, productivity, and overall quality of life.

At Eagle Aesthetics and Surgery, we offer a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to diagnosing and managing your dry eye conditions.

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a widely prevalent eye condition affecting nearly 1 in 2-3 individuals.

It occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This can result in irritation, redness, gritty sensation, blurred vision, and even increased tearing as the eyes try to compensate.

Did You Know?

Dry eye is common especially among those who have an average of 7-8 hours of screen time per day, where the blink rate is reduced from 22 times per minute to 6 times per minute.

Causes can range:

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)

Environmental triggers

Digital eye strain

Ageing

Hormonal changes

Autoimmune conditions

Medications

Eye surgeries / Laser Correction

Contact Lens Wear

Comprehensive Dry Eye Assessment

Effective treatment begins with accurate diagnosis. We perform a detailed evaluation using both clinical examination and non-invasive imaging tools to understand the root causes of your symptoms.

Our assessment includes:

Slit Lamp Examination

We evaluate your tear film and ocular surface in real time using:

  • Non-Invasive Tear Break-Up Time – measures tear film stability
  • Tear Meniscus Height – assesses tear volume
  • Schirmer’s Test – measures baseline tear production
Normal meibomian (oil) gland
Atrophic meibomian (oil) gland

Meibography

This imaging technique allows us to visualise the structure and function of your meibomian glands – key components of the oily tear layer that prevent rapid evaporation.

Personalised Treatment Plan for Dry Eyes

Dry eye management is not one-size-fits-all. Based on your diagnostic results, we will develop a tailored plan that may include:

Medications & Supplements

  • Lubricating eye drops/gel/ointments to provide immediate relief.
  • Anti-inflammatory eye drops to calm the ocular surface.
  • Oral supplements (e.g., omega-3) to improve tear quality and reduce gland inflammation.

In-Office Treatments

Broadband light (BBL): An Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)- based treatment that targets inflammation and improves oil gland function, especially for those with meibomian gland dysfunction.

Envision (IPL + Radiofrequency): Combines light therapy with RF energy to both treat inflammation and gently heat the skin around the eyelids, encouraging better gland expression and tear stability.

Additionally, these treatments improve the fine lines and wrinkles in the gentle eyelid skin, giving a refreshed look inside and out.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Dry eye commonly presents as grittiness, discomfort (foreign body sensation), eye strain and redness. However, it can also cause other symptoms like itchiness, excessive tearing, intermittent blurry vision, etc.

A thorough assessment by our doctors helps us determine the exact cause and customise the treatment accordingly.

For many people, dry eye is a chronic condition that can be managed effectively. With consistent care and the right treatment approach, most people experience significant relief and better daily comfort.

Lubricating drops can offer quick relief, but prescription treatments go further by addressing the underlying inflammation and gland function.

Combined with in-office therapies like IPL and RF, we can treat the root causes and help restore balance to your eyes.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) reduces inflammation around the eyelids and helps restore the function of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oily layer of your tears. This reduces tear evaporation and improves long-term comfort.

Radiofrequency energy (RF) gently heats the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing oil in the tears. This heat helps to unblock the glands, allowing them to produce more and better quality oil. It also stimulates collagen production, which can help to tighten the skin around the eyes and improve overall ocular health.

Each treatment takes only about 30-40 minutes and done in-office, and many patients experience immediate relief from their dry eye symptoms.

We recommend approximately 3-4 treatments, spaced one month apart, for optimal results. Maintenance treatments are then recommended once or twice a year after the initial series to maintain the benefits.

  • Chronic dry eyes/ MGD
  • Demodex blepharitis
  • Chalazion/ Stye (active/ chronic)
  • Post-LASIK dry eyes
  • Pre-cataract surgery optimisation of ocular surface (for accurate IOL calculations)
  • Other uses:
    • Medical aesthetics (addresses fine lines, wrinkles in eyelid and periorbital skin, facial flushing, pigmentation, acne, refines skin texture, improves elasticity and firmness of skin)

No prior preparation is needed! You can continue all your usual medications (for eyes and systemic medications).

On the day of the procedure, we advise you to avoid wearing eye makeup, remove eyelash extensions and magnetic lashes (if applicable), and remove contact lenses before the procedure.
