5 Things to Not Do After Aesthetic Procedures

Undergoing aesthetic treatments such as botulinum toxin injections, dermal fillers, microneedling, or laser therapy can significantly enhance your skin’s appearance. However, proper aftercare is essential to maximise results and minimise side effects.

Here are five important things you should avoid after these procedures:

Laser done ✔️ Don’t undo your results! Follow these post-treatment tips to keep your skin happy and healthy.

1. Do Not Touch or Massage the Treated Area

After treatments like botulinum toxin or dermal fillers, it’s crucial to avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the injected areas. This can cause the product to move from its intended placement, leading to uneven results or complications such as bruising and swelling.

What to do instead: Leave the area alone and let it settle naturally. Follow your practitioner’s guidance on when gentle cleansing or skincare can resume.

2. Avoid Intense Workouts and Excessive Sweating

High-intensity exercise increases blood flow and body heat, which can worsen swelling and potentially reduce the effectiveness of injectable treatments.

What to do instead: For botulinum toxin and fillers: Avoid strenuous activity for 24–48 hours. For microneedling and lasers: Skip heavy workouts for at least 48 hours, as sweating can irritate healing skin.

3. Skip Saunas, Hot Showers, and Sun Exposure

Heat exposure immediately after treatments can dilate blood vessels, increase swelling, and prolong redness. UV rays from sun exposure can also interfere with skin healing, especially after microneedling or laser sessions, increasing the risk of hyperpigmentation.

What to do instead: Take lukewarm showers and use broad-spectrum sunscreen if you need to go outdoors.

4. Do Not Apply Harsh Skincare Products

After microneedling or laser treatments, your skin barrier is temporarily weakened, making it more sensitive. Avoid active ingredients such as retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C until your provider advises it is safe.

What to do instead: Use mild cleansers, soothing serums (like hyaluronic acid), and fragrance-free moisturisers to aid recovery. Follow the instructions of your aesthetics doctor.

5. Avoid Alcohol and Blood-Thinning Medications (If Advised)

Alcohol and blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin or ibuprofen) can increase the risk of bruising and prolong healing, particularly after injectables.

What to do instead: If you need to take any medication, consult your doctor first. Stick to water and hydrating fluids in the first 24 hours.

Post-procedure aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself. Following these guidelines helps minimise bruising, swelling, and irritation, ensures even and lasting results and reduce the risk of complications like infection or pigmentation
